High-yield dividend income can be obtained by selective due diligence. In this article I will address the prospects of companies with high current dividend yields. Often times, a stock with a high yield has high risk. The high-yield investor must avoid the high risk in order to preserve his or her asset base and investing capital. (Click charts to expand)

Amidst the mixed movement of the U.S. market, several companies declared their future dividend plans. Some notable dividend payers are discussed here.
Walt Disney Co. (NYSE: DIS) increased the company's annual dividend to $0.60 a share, up 50 percent from the previous year following strong quarterly and annual earnings. The increase of $0.20 a share comes after several consecutive quarters in which the company has used cash reserves for share buybacks, another way of boosting the value of outstanding shares. Shares added 0.39 percent, or $0.14, to trade at $35.99.
Sunoco Inc. (NYSE: SUN) declared a special stock dividend to its shareholders of its stake in coke producer SunCoke Energy Inc., which was spun off earlier this year. Sunoco said the special stock dividend represents... more

Most of the time, if you want to make money in stocks, you need to pick stocks whose prices will soar through the roof. But if you're tuned into the market's hottest dividend plays of the past several years, then you know that in some cases, you can earn double-digit returns even if share prices don't move one red cent.
That's the philosophy behind my pick for the best ETF for 2012: Market Vectors Mortgage REIT Income (NYSE: MORT) . Although I'm somewhat more skeptical than many about the ETF's long-term prospects, a unique combination of favorable factors should give it a good chance to deliver great income and good total returns for at least the next year.... more

Dividend investing is a favorite strategy of many investors around the world. Especially for income investors, the dividend income is responsible for up to 50 percent of the annual return. Dividend investors often watch stocks for ex-dividend dates because the ex-dividend date is a major date related to the payment of dividends. If you purchase a stock on its ex-dividend date or later, you will not receive the next dividend payment. Instead, the seller gets the dividend. If you purchase before the ex-dividend date, you get the dividend. I screened some interesting high-yield stocks with ex-dividend date within December 2011. As a result of my screening, I found 88 high-yielding stocks paying forthcoming dividends and having ex-dividend within December 2011. The average yield amounts to... more

If your goal is to accumulate wealth for a comfortable retirement, then there is no risk-free path. Yield and risk tend to follow each other. As risk increases, the investor demands more yield to compensate for that risk. Sometimes it is desirable to accept higher risk for a higher yield. Other times we may be accepting higher risk and are not being adequately compensated for the additional risk.
A stock with a high yield doesn't offer much if the price significantly declines after its dividend is cut or eliminated. Fortunately, the market does not always behave in a rational manner. This will sometimes create an abnormal relationship between risk and yield.
As a society we have grown accustom to wanting it all, including our investments. Specifically, many income investors... more
