Has The Sell-Off Created Any Dividend Paying Value Stocks In The Clean Energy Sector?
The silver lining of all market declines is the chance to buy stock in quality companies at attractive prices. That opportunity has been notably absent over the last two years, which is why my focus has shifted to smaller and smaller companies in search of reasonable valuations over that time. Although I still don't believe the market is cheap by any measure other than comparing it to a couple months ago, the volatility is starting to bring some individual bargains, especially on heavy selling days. For instance, I've started to acquire some of the waste management stocks that I looked at last week, although I'm still waiting on another round of selling to purchase others. In particular, I am looking for companies with high dividend yields that are well covered by free cash... more

7 Oversold, High-Yield Dividend Stocks Poised For Sharp Rebounds
With interest rates almost guaranteed to be low for years, there are few investments that will be likely to match the returns available from high yielding dividend stocks. After a market correction that took down almost every stock, even many dividend stocks are oversold now and the market is providing an excellent entry point for long term investors. With rates stuck near zero for at least a couple more years, smart investors are focused on building a portfolio that will pay them much more than what most bonds, certificates of deposits, and other investments will pay. The fact that these stocks have come down in price means there is a good chance they can rebound and offer investors a dividend plus capital gains in the coming months. The stocks below would create a diversified portfolio... more

7 Stocks With Rising Dividends, Falling Payout Ratios, And Strong Corporate Governance
When a company raises their dividend, while their payout ratio falls over the same time period, it is an especially good sign because it implies that earnings are rising, and dividends are being raised, without any compromise to dividend sustainability. We ran a screen on stocks exhibiting these trends, with increases in dividend per share year-over-year and decreases in payout ratio, comparing the trailing-twelve-month ratio to the company’s three-year average. We screened these stocks for those with strong corporate governance ratings from RiskMetrics. RiskMetrics Group gives ratings for four areas of corporate governance, on risks related to: the board, the audit committee, the compensation committee, and shareholder rights.Interactive Chart: Press Play to compare changes in... more

Thank The Dividend Gods For These 5 Stocks
With the S&P 500 (SPY) yielding a paltry 2.09%, I looked to the proverbial dividend gods to see what value plays could boost portfolio yield. Below are the 5 stocks I found: American Capital Agency Corp (AGNC) American Capital Agency Corp is a REIT that invests in securities whose payments (interest and principal) are guaranteed by either US government agency or US government sponsored entity. AGNC is currently offering hefty risk adjusted 19.60% dividend yield to its investors as compared to US 10 year treasuries bond yield of 2.13%. The company has paid $1.40 in dividend in its last quarter and maintaining its high payout ratio despite of the decline in EPS for the past three quarters. This also indicates the consistent payout strategy by the management and comfortable cash... more

5 Dividend Stocks to Hold Forever
The term dividend usually refers to a cash distribution of earnings. If a distribution is made from sources another than current or accumulated retained earnings, the term distribution rather than dividend is used. However, it is acceptable to refer to a distribution from earnings as dividend and a distribution from capital as a liquidating dividend. In recent years US corporations have paid out about 40% of their net income as cash dividends. However, a significant number of firms pay no cash dividends while many pay dividends in excess of their net income. Corporations view the dividend decision as quite important because it determines what funds flow to investors and what funds are retained by the firm for reinvestment. Dividend policy can also provide information to the stock holder... more

The Short-Term Power of Reinvesting Dividends
One of the least discussed topics among financial pundits on TV and in the newspapers is the power of reinvested dividends. It seems that business channels, in an effort to drive ratings, would rather talk about the stock that doubles in price from $15 to $30 as opposed to focusing on solid companies that throw off ever-growing amounts of cash to shareholders on a quarterly basis, year-in and year-out. Whenever someone like Jim Cramer pumps a stock, he’ll throw in that it also has a 3-4% dividend as if it’s an afterthought. To get an idea of how powerful dividend reinvestment can be, let’s take a look at the performance of Altria stock over the past three years. As most Altria (MO) shareholders remember quite well, the company divested its international tobacco arm... more

Utilities: Invest In Them For The Dividend Growth
Most investors don’t think of power, natural gas, communications and water as growth businesses. Ironically, for more than 100 years no industries have grown more reliably. Perhaps more surprising, the key to successful investing in industry stocks has been to follow the growth. That’s food for thought here in summer 2011, as investors fret about everything from sluggish economic growth to the financial health of the federal government. Utility stocks are, of course, hardly immune from general market trends, at least in the near term. They didn’t crash as hard in 2008 as most stocks, or even as they did in 2001-02 following the implosion of then-industry leaders Enron and WorldCom. But the electric-heavy large-cap Philadelphia Stock Exchange Utility Index did... more

5 Dividend Stocks Building Future Yield
As a young investor I followed an aggressive growth strategy. Having narrowly missed the tech bubble bursting, I purchased my first dividend stock on December 11, 2003. I had heard dividend investments were supposed to be safer, but knew very little else about the strategy. I was fortunate enough to accidentally buy enough good dividend stocks to learn the “secret” of dividend investing . It is not necessarily starting with a high-yield investment, but ending up with a high-yield investment. This usually occurs by buying stocks with a moderate yield and a long history of growing dividends and letting time do its job. This week several companies are building future yield by increasing the cash dividends paid to their shareholders:MTS Systems Corporation (MTSC) supplies test... more

7 Dividend Stocks Giving Out More Cash
With the current turbulence in the market, we use ETFs to measure the relative performance of different asset classes. This is based on a aggregate momentum over one week, month, quarter, half year and year. Our observations of the current global asset trends are: Gold and international bonds and treasury bonds are at the top of the rankings. Precious metals and commodities are the only risk asset that are still above cash but ranked below the U.S. total bond index. All other risk assets (U.S. stocks, international stocks, emerging market and frontier stocks, REITs and high yield bonds) are now ranked lower than cash. With this backdrop, dividends remain key. Strong dividends and sound companies are critical to riding out this current wave of fear... more
