3 Waste Management Dividend Stocks: 1 To Buy, 1 To Hold And 1 To Avoid
The Landscape Regulated utilities posted a 2.0% and 7.5% nominal and total return in 2012. Small- and mid-cap regulated issuers were up 1.6% while large issuers were up 1.1% on a nominal basis, according to Barclays. Strong investor interest in dividend-paying stocks continued to stoke positive income fund flows. This support was offset by investor concerns about group price-to-earnings valuation levels and uncertainty about dividend tax policy after the November elections. As for valuation, the regulated group ended the year with very compressed price-to-earnings multiples. The relative 2014 P/E ratio spread between large-capitalization regulated companies and small- to mid-capitalization regulated companies stood at just 0.8%. This is very tight versus the historically normal range of... more

Can Windstream Maintain Its Ample Dividend Yield?
Although CenturyLink (CTL) is still the primus inter pares of the rural telecom sector even after its recent dividend reduction we have also been covering its two largest competitors Frontier Communications Corporation (FTR) and Windstream Corporation (WIN). Windstream's shares generated a negative 22% total return in 2012 but bounced back by 7.55% because investors are relieved that Windstream hasn't cut its dividend, or at least not yet. We began warming up to Windstream's 11.5% yield because Windstream's shares have been beaten so badly throughout 2012 and because we were expecting it to ease back on its capital investment program in 2013. We were pleased to see that Windstream's management confirmed our expectations on its CapEx and that it would reduce its capital... more

Utility Investors Should Focus On ROIC, Not Dividend Yield - Part II S&P Utility Index
Part I of this 3-part series reviewed an article published in the utility industry trade publication Public Utilities Fortnightly in 2007 that is still worth reading. The article is titled, "How to Achieve High Performance, Lessons from the Top 40 Utilities." Many investors focus on the wrong fundamentals by concentrating on dividend yield. According to the information compiled by Public Utilities Fortnightly, there is a substantially higher correlation factor between three-year total stock returns and Return on Invested Capital (ROIC) and Return on Equity (ROE) than a utility's current dividend yield. ROIC is an important concept for capital-intensive businesses. It measure management's effectiveness in generating shareholder returns based on all the... more

Shiver Me Timbers: Investing In Timber For Dividends
With the homebuilding stocks on a tear over the past twelve months, what are some other industries that could be big benefactors from the surge in housing? One industry I find intriguing is in the specialty REIT space, specifically, the timer REITs. The big three timber REITs, Rayonier (RYN), Plum Creek Timber (PCL) and Weyerhaeuser Company (WY) all have there respective exposure to the core timber and housing market, but the inner-workings of each company makes them solid investments in their own right; they all also pay dividend yields in excess of 2.5%. Plum Creek Timber is one of the largest owners of private timberland in the U.S. and pays the highest dividend yield of the three at 3.3%. The company produces lumber and plywood at various wood products manufacturing facilities in the... more
