Retire On Dividends: Can You Still Build A High Yield Portfolio For Retirement?

Investors looking for a solid yield for retirement are stuck in a terrible situation. While bond yields moved significantly higher, the equity market has rallied to the extent that there are far fewer compelling options. The growth in valuations is significantly disconnected from growth in the economy. GDP growth remains low and several securities that frequently trade on some multiple of book value (usually less than 1.0x) are now trading at much higher than normal valuations. This is a very difficult time for an investor to build a portfolio that relies on dividend income. On the other hand, if the investor tries to generate most of their income from bonds they could struggle with inflation since their interest payments won’t grow.
So What Does a Dividend Investor Do?
The first step is to remain disciplined. Establish securities to watch and learn what valuations are reasonable for them. Once that list is established, the investor is simply looking for attractive entry valuations on a more finite list of securities. Attempting to scan the entire market is absurdly difficult.
Some investors rely on very complex screening tools that lead to selecting stocks with little regard for the industry or the challenges the stock may be facing. They focus purely on past GAAP financial metrics because those are the easiest thing to screen. I think that is a poor choice, but it appears to be becoming significantly more common.
