Getting high yield is great, what's even better is getting high yield combined with dividend growth. Most investors have heard the term "Dividend Aristocrat," this title is granted to companies that have a particularly impressive record of not only paying a dividend, but increasing it routinely.
To be a Dividend Aristocrat, a company needs to increase their dividend at least once a year for 25 consecutive years. Go one year without a dividend increase, off the list. Obviously, this is a very difficult standard to meet as over the course of 25 years, a company is going to go through several periods of economic turmoil. It's a very difficult group to get into, and as of today, only 65 companies are on the list.
Disruptive macro events, like COVID-19 or the Great Financial Crisis, are the types of things that have historically put Dividend Aristocrats at risk of losing their status and being forced to maintain, reduce or even suspend their dividend, putting them off the list for at least 25 years.
